Any clues Oppo? Found in basement of my wife's grandparents. Her Grandpa used to work for a company that made carbon seals for jet engines.

OwO
what’s this?

Seriously, you don’t know what that is? That’s hilarious.

Looks like part of a giant needle valve, but I have no clue

Is it hollow to the tip? It looks like a giant version of a jet to a carburetor.

Guide/align/locking pin for something would be my guess. Did he just make parts, or actually work on jets?
![]() 09/17/2018 at 18:43 |

It is not

For putting in threads?

I’m guessing some sort of milling machine or lathe adapter, since it looks like a morse or Jacob s taper, something like this:

Maybe a very old pitot tube?
![]() 09/17/2018 at 19:22 |

Machining tool of some kind? Looks kinda like the taper that goes in the head of a mill but everything else about it doesn’t fit.

Looks like a guide pin or some sort of mandrel to me.

Cooling pin? Just guessing. Probably a bad guess.

I am not sure of all the things he made other than he was really proud of the seals.

It could be a housing for a temperature sensor for some kind of harsh conditions. Coloring looks like brass so I guess it’s not for jet engines. My example looks quite similar but it appears to be wearing a s teampunk helmet.
Description about my example says:
Element:
PT100
Process Connection: G1"1/4 or G1"1/2 on bracket
Electrical Connection: terminal block
Outlet: PG16
Measurement Range: -50°C / +80°C
...
AMB temperature sensors are particularly recommended for use in “refrigerated atmospheres such as cargo holds, containers, warehouses and cold rooms.
Key parameters include:
• Possibility for 360° orientation of the sensor head for access to the cable glands
• Choice of sensing elements: thermocouple (all types) or resistant probe (simplex or duplex)
• Standard, nuclear or explosive atmosphere versions are available
• Fitted on set square or bulkhead
• Optionally, a 4-20 mA head transmitter can be integrated
• The electrical connection can be made by simple cable gland or qualified connector

I want to say it’s some kind of mandrel.

injection molding maybe
![]() 09/17/2018 at 22:34 |

This is a reusable alignment / locating pin.
“How do you know that, RootWyrm!?”

This might be it. I will do some looking into this.

Any part number, serial number or national stock number on it?

Threaded, so it can’t fall out! Genius!
But does one use KY or blue Loctite?
![]() 09/18/2018 at 13:23 |

Loctite, and film that trip to the ER.

Nothing, that's what I looked for first.

It looks like the type of tools I have used for pre-forming carbon seals prior to installation, but not exactly. Every seal has its own tool, though.
![]() 09/20/2018 at 12:37 |

Well it might be that. Her grandfather worked as an engineer at a company that made carbon seals. I can’t remember the company right off hand but will try to find out. I think we took this home with us also.

It’s crazy just how many specialized tools are required for every engine. I worked on T-56 engines for 8 years, now I work on F-100 engines- so far I’ve found 1 specialized tool that is shared between the two (and we don’t even use it).

About $1 of brass at the metal recycle shop ? In other words how grandad put your wife’s father through college?

Lol it's stainless steel but yeah.
